Understanding spot trade execution

Learn the difference between a spot quote and settlement, what to review in an order and how to interpret a completed onchain transaction.

From intention to execution

A spot trade begins with an input asset, an output asset and an amount. The resulting quote estimates the exchange available under current conditions. It is useful to record the input quantity, expected output, any minimum output and the time at which the quote was obtained. This page explains that general process rather than specific Rialto screen controls.

Review the complete exchange

A displayed unit price is only part of the result. Token decimals, network costs, venue charges and execution conditions can change the effective price. Compare the net output for the same input amount. For example, two quotes with different headline prices can reverse their ranking after explicit costs are included.

Approval and settlement are different events

In many token systems, an approval grants a contract permission to spend an asset; it does not itself complete a swap. A submitted swap may be pending, confirmed or unsuccessful. Review the transaction outcome and token balance changes rather than interpreting a signature request or submission message as a completed exchange.

Reading a completed transaction

Use the relevant explorer to inspect status, network, transferred token contracts and amounts. A successful receipt shows that the transaction executed, but interpreting the economic result still requires the correct decimals and asset identity. If a transaction is unsuccessful, examine the reported reason before retrying; a retry is a new action with its own conditions.
